D’ung aultre amer (2) 3v · Anonymous

Source:

*Bologna Q17 ff. 56v-57 »D’ung aultre amer« 3v (unicum) PDF · Facsimile (Q017_058)

Text: Rondeau quatrain; incipits only in Bologna Q17. For the complete rondeau text, see Ockeghem’s »D’un autre amer mon cueur s’abesseroit«.

Evaluation of the source:

This entry contains some uncorrected scribal errors (see the edition), which would have created some difficulties during a performance using the manuscript.

Comments on text and music:

Reworking of Ockeghem’s rondeau »D’un autre amer mon cueur s’abesseroit« based on Ockeghem’s superius part, which is cited unchanged above two new lower voices: a tenor in the same range as Ockgehem’s original tenor part, and a low contratenor. It is possible to put text under both new voices and perform the song as a rondeau. However, the way in which they in spurts recite the poem in fast note repetitions is very different from Ockeghem’s melodic arches, and they effectively undermine the model’s courtly style.

The piece is in Bologna Q17 placed between two four-part settings by Philippe Basiron, which build on the same superius (no. 50 ff. 55v-56: philipon, and no. 52, ff. 57v-58). Stylistically nothing hinders this setting in being a work by Basiron too. The hasty recitation of the lines of the “D’ung aultre amer”-poem suggested by the lower voices might be viewed as a precursor for his four-part double (?) chanson with canon (no. 50).
